New Weight Vest Provides Weight-bearing Exercise to Prevent Bone Loss from Osteoporosis

(ContentDesk) August 14, 2005 -- Women at risk for Osteoporosis now have a choice. Drugs like Fosomax are no longer the only solution. It has been known for some time that weight-bearing exercise promotes healthy bones. But the problem was getting women over fifty, the segment most at risk, to lift weights.A new weight vest on the market, designed by a movement therapist, eliminates the need to lift weights. The weight vest has the weights in exactly the right place to promote the building of bone density while being extremely comfortable.

Women can use this weight vest for one hour a day during exercise or when doing chores around the house and garden. They don't have to go to the gym. They can increase their bone density and improve their balance in the privacy of their homes. Dr Christine Snow, the Director of the Bone Research Laboratory, had this to say about a program of exercise, using a weight vest, to increase bone density in women at risk of Osteoporosis. "These kinds of results from an exercise routine haven't been achieved before (without the vest) and they contradict what the medical community has been saying for years.

Over a five year period exercise was as good or better than either estrogen or Fosamax for preventing bone loss." This weight vest has been designed by a woman who was diagnosed with Osteoporosis and could not find a comfortable weight vest on the market. It has heavy padding on the shoulders and the weights are up higher than other vests so that they more effectively target the spine and hip bones. Osteoporosis is often labeled the silent killer because people don't realize their bones are getting fragile until they have a fall. According to the Surgeon General's report, in the United States one in two women and one in four men, aged 50 and older, will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. This new weight vest could make a difference to those statistics..

Lower Back Extension Exercise

This is an excellent exercise for the lower back that is very simple to perform. This exercise requires no equipment and it can be performed almost anywhere, even at your office. Many people neglect to do exercises that focus on your lower back. Your lower back, Erector Spinae, supports your upper body and affects almost every sport and every day activity that you do. It is important that you exercise this part of the body.

The lower back extension is probably the best exercise for strengthening your lower back as well as eliminating or preventing lower back pain.If you sit on a chair all day, you may be experiencing tight or sore back muscles. To eliminate these nagging minor pains, perform this exercise 2-3 times per week consisting of 2 sets of 15 repetitions. This is an exercise also recommended by chiropractors and doctors. I've also seen variations of this exercise done in Pilates and Yoga. If you do constantly have back pains, it is advisable that you consult with your...
